Occupancy Policy
In order to assist in their transition to life at Yale and in the New Haven community, new first-year students in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences will be given highest priority in housing assignments at 272 Elm Street. Leases will be for a period of one academic year (August – May) and are non-renewable.
Building Description
272 Elm Street is a recently built dormitory with air-conditioning throughout. The building offers two-bedroom units, housing 82 students. Students from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences are given priority to live in this community. There will be two different unit styles, large and extra-large. Each unit will have a small kitchen, bathroom, and two bedrooms (to be shared by two graduate students). In the extra-large units, there will be a larger common space in the room.
Facilities, Furniture, and Other Features
- There are 41 two-bedroom units, located on floors three through six in the building. Floors one and two will be retail space for L.L. Bean.
- Each bedroom has University-provided furniture: full size bed, mattress, desk and desk chair, and wardrobe.
- The common rooms in each unit are not furnished.
- There is a kitchen in each unit that includes a full-height refrigerator/freezer, four-burner oven range/cooktop, garbage disposal, microwave, and granite countertops with a beautiful backsplash.
- Bathrooms include showers
- Rooms have windows with mini-blinds
Internet Access, Cable TV, and Mail/Package Delivery
- Rooms in 272 Elm Street are provided with Wifi and Internet TV service in each unit. Students accessing the Yale network must register their computers at NetReg for full use of the Internet.
- There are mailboxes and a lobby on the first floor. All students have access to on-site mail delivery.
- All package deliveries should be directed to the Barnes & Noble Student Package Center, 77 Broadway - Lower Level.
Other Amenities
- Students have access to a beautifully designed reading room on the second floor. This common room will be a comfortable place for quiet study and dorm meetings, and is equipped with a TV and overlook the courtyard. There is a landscaped courtyard behind the building with bike racks. A card-operated laundry room and fitness room will be in the lower level of the building.
Security Access for Residential Areas
- For security purposes, the front door of 272 Elm Street is a locked door. There will be a private entrance, separate from L.L.Bean for residents, at the gate/archway next to Trailblazers. Students need a valid, programed Yale ID card to access the building and elevator, and a key to open their room door.
