Housing Requests FAQs

How do I submit a request for housing?
Students can submit a request for housing by visiting the Undergraduate Housing Portal and navigating to the “Request Housing” tab. From there, students will be able to indicate for which term they are requesting housing and provide any additional relevant information to their request.

I have submitted a request for housing. What does this mean?
Students may find themselves requesting housing for a variety of reasons. Submitting a request for housing means you are requesting an on-campus housing assignment. Students can consider their housing request as a pending room assignment because in recent decades there has been room for every student who wishes to live on campus.

Is the housing request form available year round?
Students can submit a request for housing via the Housing Portal.
  • Requests for Fall term housing can be submitted beginning in February (after the intent declaration deadline has passed) up until the start of Fall term classes.
  • Requests for Spring term housing can be submitted beginning in October up until the start of Spring term classes.
Please note that students seeking on-campus housing after the start of a given term should write to the Undergraduate Housing Office. Requests submitted in the middle of a term (mid-semester request) require additional approval and are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

When will I know if there’s housing available?
  • Fall Term Placement Period
    • The placement period for the fall term opens after the spring room draw process has completed. During a short window in April, students will receive notification of available housing and be able to select from empty bed spaces on campus. More information on the process will be provided to students via email. After this process, placements for the fall term will continue to be made on a rolling basis up until the start of the fall term.
  • Spring Term Placement Period
    • The placement period for the spring term opens in November. Students will receive notification of available housing in late November. Placements for the spring term will continue to be made on a rolling basis up until the start of the spring term.
Can I see my status or my position in the housing request queue?
Because placements are offered to students within their Residential College first, before being offered to any other students, it is not possible to report on position. After submitting a request for housing, students will see their status updated to Pending Room Assignment

How likely is it that my request will be processed and I will be offered an assignment?
The likelihood of being offered an on-campus housing assignment depends on a variety of factors, such as eligibility, housing availability, and the timing of space openings. Students who have requested housing are assigned to available spaces first within their residential college. If no spaces remain there, assignments may be made in annex housing and/or across the residential colleges. Students should expect to share a suite and/or bedroom. Single-room requests are not guaranteed and are unlikely to be met without an approved accommodation through the SAS office.

Historically, in recent decades, the Undergraduate Housing Office has been able to provide housing to all students who have requested housing. Though, it is important to note that requesting housing does not guarantee housing. Students will see their status in the housing portal as Pending Room Assignment

Can I request a specific bathroom designation?
When submitting a request for housing, you will have the opportunity to provide additional relevant information to the Housing Office to aid in your placement. You may make this request at that point. Please note that while requests related to placements will be considered, they are unlikely to be met.

Can I request to live with other people who have requested housing or join a group with a placeholder?
Following the open selection period in April, students in the housing request queue cannot participate in room draw and will not have access to form or join groups. When submitting a request for housing, you will have the opportunity to provide additional relevant information to the Housing Office to aid in your placement. You may make this request at that point. Please note that while requests related to placements will be considered, they are unlikely to be met.

Can I request a specific room?
When submitting a request for housing, you will have the opportunity to provide additional relevant information to the Housing Office to aid in your placement. If you participate in the short selection period in April, you will be able to choose from empty bed spaces on campus. If you submit a request after the open selection period in April, your requests related to placements will be considered, but are unlikely to be met.

I am currently seeking reinstatement and want to live on-campus. Can I still request housing?
Yes, you are eligible to submit a request for housing while your reinstatement is pending. However, your eligibility to receive a housing assignment is contingent upon the approval of your reinstatement. A housing assignment will not be offered until your reinstatement is approved and finalized. If your reinstatement is approved after you’ve submitted a request, you will be considered for housing based on availability at that time.

I submitted a request for an accommodation through the SAS office. How will this impact my housing request?
Students with approved accommodations should be sure to make note of this within their housing request form. If housing remains available that can meet the accommodation need, approved accommodations will be taken into consideration when placements are being made .

Students with pending accommodation decisions are still expected to take action regarding their housing assignment within the provided deadline, assuming that receiving on-campus housing is their top priority. If you are later approved for an accommodation after accepting your assignment offer, your housing assignment will be adjusted if necessary and if a room is available.

Can I request a different room than what was offered?
Assignments are not able to be changed. Students can either choose to accept the assignment or decline on-campus housing. Students who choose not to accept their assignment can opt to submit another request for housing in hopes of getting a different assignment. Though, please note that this does not guarantee a different room.
