SAS Housing Accommodations
Housing Accommodations are granted solely by the Student Accessibility Services office, and students may be required to reapply for accommodations each year. The deadline for housing accommodation requests is January 15th, 2025. While requests for accommodations will be considered after the deadline, the accommodation cannot be guaranteed to be met if a request was not received by the deadline.
Students with an approved Housing Accommodation will see this information reflected in the Undergraduate Housing Portal after February 20th. In addition to the accommodation on file, students will also be provided information on how their accommodation can be guaranteed to be met. Depending on the accommodation, and the housing inventory available in a student’s college, there are three possible pathways to satisfy your accommodation:
- Some accommodations can be met in all available housing, and students will be directed to proceed through grouping in any configuration available in their draw.
- Some accommodations may be met in most available housing. Students will proceed through grouping, and will be directed to form a group that will allow for their accommodation to be met. For example, a student with an accommodation for a single must form into a group size that will allow for their group to select a suite with a single in it. Similarly, a student with an accommodation for a nut-free suite should group with students who will abide by this accommodation.
- Some accommodations can only be met in very limited available housing. In these instances, students may opt to either be pre-assigned housing (forgoing their participation in the housing selection process) or opt to proceed through the grouping and room selection stages of room draw*.
*Please note: An accommodation cannot be guaranteed if a student chooses to forgo a pre-assignment or through forming into a group that cannot meet their accommodation.
Religious Accommodations
Yale College has no formal religious accommodation policy, but the residential colleges and the housing team will take reasonable steps to meet students’ needs. For example, students with sabbath obligations can be issued physical keys and assigned to colleges without automatic lighting or plumbing.
Bathroom Designations
Residential Colleges designate bathrooms within the college as single-gender or gender-inclusive. Students are able to live in rooms and suites of any gender configuration, but bathrooms will have a gender assignment of women’s bathroom, men’s bathroom, or gender-inclusive bathroom. These bathroom types will alternate, so that students can always find options by heading up- or downstairs.
When group formation opens, students will be able to view all bathroom designations, along with the available suite configurations within their residential college. This information will remain available to students during group formation and the room selection phases of the housing process. Students should take bathroom designations and locations into account when forming groups and selecting rooms and suites. Students can visit the Undergraduate Housing Portal to view this information.
Change of College Affiliation
The application process for change of college affiliation is overseen centrally by the Yale College Dean’s Office. Students may request a change of college affiliation by completing this application. Applications must be submitted by 12:00pm, noon (EST), January 17th, 2025.
Transfer applicants need a current student in the prospective residential college to sponsor the transfer. Please note that approved transfer requests, and housing arrangements included on applications, are binding. Students will be notified of application status in early February.
This process does not require or invite students to make appeals to their current residential college staff, or that of the college to which they are applying to transfer beyond the information being requested in the form.
Yale College Community Care (YC3)
YC3 is a resource to help students gain skills and strategies around communication, stress, relationships and more. The suitemate and roommate agreements are templates students can use when forming a group and exploring living habits for next year.
Please note that YC3 does not make housing decisions but can help students brainstorm around common housing issues. To make an appointment with anyone on the team, please visit their website.
